The left chest features the 23rd Fighter Group shield-shaped patch, the left shoulder bears the CBI theater, established in December 1941, which stands for China-Burma-India and was aimed at aiding China in its fight against Japan and preventing its collapse in the war. U.S. aid to China started even before entering the war, with the American Volunteer Group (AVG), famously called the "Flying Tigers". Upon U.S. entry, the 14th Air Force was formed, absorbing the AVG. The 23rd Fighter Group directly inherited the AVG's spirit. All the patches on the jacket are leather, hand-crafted by layering finely cut leather pieces.
