The 2nd Air Refueling Squadron is the second-oldest in the U.S. Air Force and has served the United States for over 100 years. In July 1952, the 2nd Air Refueling Squadron supported the F-84s of the 31st Fighter Escort Wing as they deployed to Japan from Turner Air Force Base in Georgia. The operation began on July 4, and the refueling aircraft refueled the F-84s over Wink, Texas, while en route to Castle Air Force Base in California. Upon completing the trans-Pacific aerial refueling, the squadron joined forces with aerial refueling aircraft from the 91st and 93rd Air Wings and carried out an 11,000-mile flight mission from Castle to Japan, via Hickam Air Force Base in Hawaii, Midway Island, Wake Island, Eniwetok Atoll, Guam, and Iwo Jima.
