It is a natural, non-destructive aging process for this copper-zinc alloy. - Clean brass by washing with warm, soapy water and a soft cloth for light cleaning. For tarnish, apply a paste of equal parts lemon juice and baking soda, let sit, rub gently, rinse, and dry thoroughly. Alternatively, use ketchup, vinegar/salt mixture, or a commercial cleaner like Brasso. - To store brass; store in a cool, dry, dark place, ideally in airtight bags to avoid humidity when not in frequent use.
