This shirt comes from the 2020 collaboration between Yohji Yamamoto’s GroundY and Kawanabe Kyōsui, daughter of Kawanabe Kyosai (1831-1889), a renowned Kano-School artist known as the “Demon of Painting” who was active in the mid-to-late 1800s. The shirt features a striking Ukiyo-e style print, characterized by its vivid colours and intricate details. Kawanabe Kyōsui (1868-1935) was a distinguished artist in her own right, trained by her father in the traditional Japanese painting style. She became well-known for her detailed and expressive works that often depicted scenes from Japanese folklore, daily life, and historical events. Her work carried on the legacy of her father’s dynamic and sometimes eccentric style, while also contributing her own unique perspective and finesse. Kyōsui was also an influential figure in the world of Japanese art education, teaching many students who would go on to become notable artists themselves. Her contributions to the arts were recognized during her lifetime, and she remains celebrated for her ability to blend traditional techniques with her own creative vision.
